Music occupies a central role in the daily life of our pupils and since the college’s inception, we have steadily built an enviable musical reputation, both locally and further afield. From the concerts and assemblies delivered in our state-of-the-art theatre, to the instrumental ensembles and individual lessons we provide on a daily basis, our pupils are given every opportunity to experience the enjoyment of exploring and making music on their own terms.
Our department is a vibrant and flourishing one, as it is run by a composite team of dedicated music staff and visiting instrumental teachers. Each departmental member is both ambitious and accessible in their approach; everyone is committed to the ideal of providing inspirational, innovative teaching at all levels.
Pupils from pre-nursery to year 9 receive a specialist music lesson every week. They study a range of topics and musical styles intended to excite their curiosity and rapidly develop their musical creativity. Music is offered as an IGCSE option in years 10 and 11 and also as a part of the IB Diploma Programme in years 12 and 13
The music department strives to provide pupils with the opportunity to access a variety of instruments from around the world. Classroom music will include training in basic keyboard technique, recorder, ukulele, African drums, percussion instruments, as well as singing.
Wellington College has an excellent reputation for the high-quality of its performances, including many concerts throughout the year showcasing the skills of our instrumentalists. Our musicals are a genuine highlight of the music department’s calendar and they add to an already expansive and exciting programme that is growing in scale and ambition every year.
