Ms Emma Layfield joined the senior science department at Wellington College Bangkok in May 2025, where she has taught KS3 Science and KS4 Physics. Emma is returning in August 2025 to lead the Junior Science Department. Ms Layfield graduated from York University with a PGCE in Secondary Science, after working in Industry as an Analytical Chemist for a number of years. After graduating from Plymouth University in 1997 with a BSc in Environmental Science, Ms Layfield continues her keen interests in the environment and will be the sustainability lead at the Junior school. After working for a large pharmaceutical company, analysing soil and ground water samples for contamination, Ms Layfield moved to the Central Science Laboratories in York where she was responsible for GCMS analysis of contaminated food samples, contributing to numerous papers in this field. Ms Layfield entered the teaching profession in 2003, working in a variety of state and independent schools, becoming Head of Junior Science in 2007 at St Peters School, York. Ms Layfield worked in UK boarding schools including Headington School, Oxford and for the last 6 years was Head of Boarding and Head of Science at Perrott Hill School in Somerset, UK. Science touches every aspect of our lives whatever our interests – it is a diverse and evolving subject that encourages students to explore through open questioning and investigative work, building skills that are essential for the future. Students are encouraged to be actively involved in the lesson, planning, evaluating and analysing the data they collect to enhance understanding by not only seeing, but doing. I believe in giving children responsibility for their learning, acting as a guide and mentor to ensure every child not only achieves academically, but becomes a confident, resilient and enthusiastic young scientist ready to face the challenges of senior school and beyond. With experience across KS2, 3 and 4 I am ideally placed to support and extend students – I am excited to share my enthusiasm of science with all KS2 and help them along their journey.
